Position Overview

The Restaurant & Merchandise Manager is responsible for assisting with the daily management of the Elk & Oarsman while overseeing the restaurant's merchandise program.

This position combines hands-on restaurant management with responsibility for merchandise sales, inventory, product development, and promotions.

The successful candidate must be a strong leader who takes initiative, holds staff accountable, maintains high service standards, and contributes to the overall success and profitability of the business.

Restaurant Management Responsibilities

Oversee daily restaurant operations and ensure smooth, efficient service.
Actively manage the floor, supporting servers, bartenders, hosts, and support staff.
Lead and motivate employees while maintaining accountability and professionalism.
Ensure staff follow restaurant policies, service standards, and uniform requirements.
Handle guest concerns and resolve issues professionally.
Maintain strong communication between front-of-house and kitchen teams.
Assist with staff training, development, and performance management.
Monitor staffing levels, breaks, and labour efficiency.
Complete opening and closing procedures, cash-outs, and daily management duties.
Ensure the restaurant remains clean, organized, and properly maintained.
Assist the General Manager with implementing improvements to service and restaurant performance.
Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and follow through without constant supervision.
Merchandise Management Responsibilities

Product Development & Purchasing

Research and develop new merchandise ideas that reflect the Elk & Oarsman brand.
Work with suppliers on product selection, designs, pricing, and quality.
Recommend new merchandise, including clothing, hats, glassware, and other branded products.
Plan seasonal merchandise collections and special promotional products.
Coordinate merchandise orders with approval from the General Manager.
Inventory & Organization

Maintain accurate merchandise inventory and stock records.
Conduct regular inventory counts.
Monitor product sales and identify best-selling and slow-moving items.
Ensure merchandise is properly received, labelled, priced, and stored.
Manage stock replenishment and prevent unnecessary overordering.
Maintain organized and visually appealing merchandise displays.
Sales & Promotions

Develop strategies to increase merchandise sales.
Train and encourage staff to promote merchandise to guests.
Coordinate merchandise promotions during holidays, sporting events, and busy tourism periods.
Assist with social media promotions and new product launches.
Identify opportunities to increase merchandise visibility and revenue.
Leadership & Accountability

Lead by example and maintain a strong management presence.
Ensure employees understand and follow workplace expectations.
Address staff performance concerns promptly and professionally.
Support fellow managers and maintain consistent management standards.
Demonstrate strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Take initiative in identifying areas for improvement.
Maintain open communication with the General Manager.
Balance merchandise responsibilities with the daily demands of running a busy restaurant.
Merchandise Reporting & Performance

Provide monthly merchandise sales and inventory updates.
Monitor merchandise costs, selling prices, and profit margins.
Recommend changes to improve merchandise profitability.
Identify purchasing opportunities and potential new products.
Work toward agreed merchandise sales targets and budgets.
Qualifications & Skills

Previous restaurant management or supervisory experience.
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to work in a busy, fast-paced restaurant environment.
Experience with inventory management, purchasing, or retail sales is an asset.
Creative thinking and an interest in merchandising and branding.
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize effectively.
Strong attention to detail and financial awareness.
Dependable, self-motivated, and capable of working independently.
Position Expectations

The Restaurant & Merchandise Manager is expected to be an active member of the management team, with restaurant service and staff leadership remaining the primary responsibilities.

Merchandise management is an additional area of ownership, requiring consistent attention, organization, and follow-through.

The goal of this position is to maintain strong restaurant operations while building a successful, profitable merchandise program that represents the Elk & Oarsman brand.

Pay: From $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20.0 – 40.0 per week
