What can you expect?

Reporting to the Controller, this role can be based out of our office in Banff or Calgary/Hybrid. This role in collaboration with our Benefits Advisor is responsible for the complete processing of salaried and hourly payroll with Dayforce Human Capital Management and oversee all aspects of payroll and a range of employee benefit programs. This position plays a key role in supporting compliance with payroll legislation and employment standards, contributing to the development and documentation of payroll and benefits procedures and serving as a subject matter expert on related systems and policies. The role also supports management with HR functions such as onboarding, offboarding and liasing with injury management partners to exchange necessary information. This is a key role that ensures our employees are paid accurately and on time while maintaining compliance with all relevant regulations and policies. The ideal candidate is a highly organized self-starter with exceptional attention to detail.

Payroll Responsibilities
Managing and ensuring accuracy of bi-weekly payroll processing while ensuring payroll practices and policies are compliant with Alberta Employment Standards.
Timely completion and preparation regarding payroll information including: Records of Employments, T4s, T4As, Alberta Workers’ Compensation and assist with audits, ad-hoc projects and other payroll reporting as required.
Validating source deductions with the Controller and addressing any discrepancies, including reconciliations of payments, government filings and balances.
Monitoring and advising management of any relevant changes to legislation along with a recommended course of action to maintain compliance.
Evaluating workflows and implementing continuous improvements to streamline processes and improve documentation and controls.
Collaborating with Human Resources to interpret, implement and enforce internal policies and procedures.
Providing mentorship and coaching to the Benefits Advisor.
Resolving escalations for payroll issues and ensuring timely remediation of issues.
Staying current on all payroll matters, including payroll legislation, employment standards, policies and benefit programs.
Communicating clearly with staff to resolve payroll-related inquiries.
Investigating and resolving benefits and payroll issues, including discrepancies in time reporting, deductions or pay calculations.
Managing setup and maintenance of the Payroll system (Dayforce).
Benefit Responsibilities
Demonstrating strong knowledge of employee benefit programs including plan administration, eligibility requirements and coordination with third party providers.
Administering the Group RRSP Plan including monthly and annual reconciliations.
Responding to benefits inquiries with clarity and patience, fostering positive relationships across the organization.
Maintaining and updating a variety of benefits records and spreadsheets, ensuring data accuracy, confidentiality and compliance with privacy legislation.
Maintaining up-to-date benefit and deduction rates.
Troubleshooting employee benefit questions and claim issues with provider as necessary.
Supporting onboarding and offboarding processes including benefits enrollment.
Reconciling monthly billing for benefit carrier and deductions from payroll for employee-paid premiums for data integrity and accuracy.
Managing Sunshine’s leave programs (STD, LTD, Maternity Leave, Apprenticeship Leave) by working with employees, managers and benefit provider to assist with the leave and return to work.
Keeping informed and educated about benefits within the area of responsibility.
And you have:
Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) designation required; Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) is a strong asset.
Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation if considered an asset.
Excellent knowledge of payroll legislation and compliance requirements.
5+ years of experience in payroll management.
Experience with Dayforce is a strong asset.
Meticulous attention of detail and a high degree of accuracy.
Superior organizational and problem solving skills.
A dedicated, proactive individual with a positive attitude and a growth mindset for continuous improvement.
Demonstrated leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills; operational planning skills; oral and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of employees.
Ability to work independently and ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and urgency, without sacrificing quality in a deadline driven seasonal environment.
Solid understanding of Canadian payroll legislation and benefit programs.
Analytical mindset and must be able to communicate in a friendly professional manner with all staff and external contacts.
Strong interest in Human Resource practices.
