Props Builder - Theatre Practitioner Level 2 or 3
This is a term position from June 23 - July 26, 2025

The Opportunity
Banff Centre is looking for a Props Builder who can work collaboratively to provide artistic support for this summer's Opera performances.

Specific Accountabilities
Reporting to the Production Manager, Performing Arts, some key responsibilities include:

Communicate with artistic directors, faculty and other production departments to coordinate the props needed for this summer's opera production
Perform research and development activities and acquire materials and props
Interpret script/score and design and help bring artistic visions to life, within scheduled timeframe and budget
Build props; this can range from sculpting props and dressings, creating molds, casts and masks, special effects and weaponry; costume props and more
Manage a props shop including overseeing the safe use of tools, equipment, and techniques
Assisting with the administration of the props department including overseeing the safety of assigned crews
Overseeing the work of early career Props Builder Practicum Participants
Staying current on related industry trends including the application of up-to-date techniques and use of special materials
Applying professional theatre techniques and methods to provide the quality, efficiency, safety, and support required by artists, and the Performing Arts department
Qualification and Educational Requirements
Theatre Practitioner level 2: must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment.
Theatre practitioner level 3: must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment.
Has completed a formal theatre education.
Must be proficient in the use of computers and multimedia and able to operate specialized equipment.
Must have a working knowledge of the theories and practices that support this discipline.
Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to stay calm under pressure.
Able to work with tight, changing timelines in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledgeable of related industry trends including the application of up to date techniques, and use of special materials and current health and safety standards.
Able to apply professional theatre techniques and methods to provide the quality, efficiency and support level required by Performing Arts.
Special Requirements
Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.
Employment Terms & Benefits
In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500-hour probationary period.
Theatre Practitioner Level 2: this position pays between $22.59 and $25.85 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
Theatre Practitioner Level 3: this position pays between $27.17 and $31.51 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
This is a two term position from June 23 - July 26, 2025
