Full job description
Position Title: Backcountry Hut Custodian and Park Ambassador


Classification: Full-Time, Seasonal. Weekends and evenings are required. 37.5 hours per week. (May 15-September 15)


Wage: $20/hour

Location: Multiple backcountry hut locations including Elk Lakes Cabin, Elizabeth Parker Hut, Bow Hut, Wheeler Hut, Asulkan Hut, Stanley Mitchell Hut.


Responsibilities:

General and preventative maintenance for the hut structures and facilities including repairing, painting, staining, re-finishing park structures and facilities.
Ensuring hut facilities remain safe, presentable, and comfortable for all guests and visitors.
Providing an orientation to overnight guests and share appropriate hut etiquette with guests, including leave-no-trace principles.
Collecting user fees at the Elk Lakes Lower Campground and daily user reporting to ACC the National Office.
Completing trail maintenance throughout Elk Lakes Provincial Park.
Maintaining an inventory of supplies at each hut and reporting to the ACC National Office.
Ensure WHIMIS and OH&S safety procedures are adhered to.
Maintain all public areas and outhouses and ensure they are clean and safe for guests.

Skills & Qualifications:

Must have a positive and engaging personality.
Have experience in the outdoor recreation industry.
Comfortable hiking 15+ km per day.
Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Strong communication skills to engage with guests and park visitors.
Time management to ensure tasks are completed in a timely and effective manner.
Ability to lift up to 50lbs and roll objects up to 75lbs.
Work indoors and outdoors.
A 2nd language is an asset.

About the ACC: The ACC is a not-for-profit organization established in 1906 that has grown to include 33 backcountry huts and 25 volunteer-run sections across the country. We also organize seasonal programs, such as our annual General Mountaineering Camp, as well as Shadow Lake Lodge and our hostel in Canmore. We have a rich history in Canadian Mountaineering and a dynamic team at the office to manage our diverse portfolios.


Position Overview: As a Backcountry Hut Custodian and Park Ambassador, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the guest experience in the Alpine Club of Canada’s most popular backcountry hut locations. Your responsibilities will include taking care of ACC hut facilities, providing hut etiquette education to guests, ensuring facilities remain comfortable and presentable, conducting inventory reports, and performing general and preventative maintenance on facilities and park trails. You will be working alone or with a team member in remote wilderness settings from May 15 - September 15.
