This role owns the overall performance of field operations, ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality while consistently meeting client expectations. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the General Superintendent provides strategic leadership and direction to Superintendents, Project Managers, General Foremen, Foremen, project support staff, and field personnel. Working collaboratively with Operations, Project Management, Maintenance, HSE, and corporate leadership, this position is accountable for operational performance across multiple projects, including workforce leadership, equipment and resource utilization, production performance, client relationships, and continuous improvement. The General Superintendent champions a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence while driving successful project outcomes and supporting the long-term growth of the organization. Work Schedule & Travel Rotation-based position with a defined work schedule. Fly-in/Fly-out (FIFO) position based in the Fort McMurray region. Flights provided from Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, for employees residing in those centers. Camp accommodations and meals provided while on shift, where applicable. Leadership Expectations The General Superintendent is expected to lead by example and create a culture of accountability, professionalism, and operational excellence. Success in this role requires the ability to: Maintain a visible leadership presence and promote a strong safety-first culture across all operations. Build trust through integrity, sound decision-making, and consistent accountability. Develop, mentor, and empower Superintendents and field leadership while fostering collaboration across Operations, Project Management, Maintenance, and HSE. Make timely, informed decisions in a fast-paced operating environment while balancing safety, production, cost, and client priorities. Drive continuous improvement by challenging existing practices and identifying opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, and overall operational performance. Lead large multidisciplinary operations consisting of multiple Superintendents, Project Managers, support staff, and field crews, often overseeing hundreds of employees and numerous pieces of heavy equipment operating simultaneously across multiple project sites. Responsibilities Own the safe, efficient, and successful execution of multiple concurrent heavy civil earthworks projects while achieving safety, production, schedule, quality, and financial performance objectives. Provide visible leadership while mentoring, coaching, and developing Superintendents and field leadership teams, building organizational capability and future leaders. Lead construction operations from mobilization through completion, ensuring field execution aligns with project plans, budgets, schedules, and contractual commitments. Partner with Project Managers to optimize construction strategies, forecasting, resource allocation, and overall project performance. Own field operational performance through effective workforce planning, equipment utilization, labour productivity, and production management. Monitor operational and financial performance, identify project risks, and implement timely corrective actions to maximize efficiency, productivity, and profitability. Champion a proactive safety culture by holding all levels of supervision accountable for company, client, and regulatory safety expectations while driving continuous improvement. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, owner representatives, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders, serving as the senior operational representative on site. Lead regular operational meetings to communicate priorities, review performance, coordinate resources, and remove barriers to successful project execution. Ensure compliance with all company policies, client standards, contractual obligations, environmental requirements, and applicable legislation. Support planning, constructability reviews, estimating, and execution planning for upcoming projects while identifying opportunities to improve operational performance and project delivery. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements: Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in heavy civil construction, including significant experience in large-scale earthworks, mine development, road construction, and industrial site development. Demonstrated success leading multiple concurrent construction projects with accountability for safety, production, schedule, quality, financial performance, and client satisfaction. Proven experience leading large multidisciplinary operations teams in a mining or heavy civil construction environment. Strong understanding of heavy equipment operations, mass earthworks production, civil construction methodologies, and mine site operations. Demonstrated ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, schedules, and project documentation. Strong leadership, communication, planning, organizational, and decision-making skills with the ability to effectively manage competing priorities. Proven ability to manage labour productivity, equipment utilization, project costs, and operational efficiency. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and project reporting software. Construction Engineering Technology Diploma (C.E.T.), Engineering Degree, Construction Management, or related education is considered an asset. Must have: Construction Safety Training Systems (CSTS) Certification; Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA) Certification; Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
