Job Description

Working in the Hotel Grounds department, the Horticulture Assistant supports our Horticulturist ensuring our various interior plants and arrangements are maintained to high standards while also taking pride in the hotel’s exterior property, ensuring its safety, and with a high attention to detail ensures visitors’ expectations are exceeded. As well, in the summer they help maintain our gardens and during the winter they assist with holiday decorations and do a lot of snow removal.

Job Duties Include:

Consistently offer professional, engaging, and friendly service
Communicate effectively, follow instructions, take direction, and constructive feedback
Labor intensive work in the form of shoveling, lifting, pushing, walking fast, digging, and assorted tasks
Year Round

Maintenance of interior plants (watering, monitoring health, and cleaning)
Maintenance and care of arrangements and seasonal plants as required
Sterilization of containers/materials and ensure all areas are kept organized
Other duties as assigned
Summer

Thorough watering, maintenance, and plant health care for all gardens and plant containers throughout the property
Extensive tracking and monitoring of moisture levels, pests, and fertilizer
Cleaning of sidewalks, driveways, outdoor light fixtures, window ledges, and all outdoor public spaces
Ensure sidewalks, mulch beds, and other areas of the property are weed free
Mowing, trimming, weeding, dealing with mulch beds and gardens around property
Holiday Season

Collect and transport decorations from storage (carrying heavy boxes up & down four flights of stairs) to final locations throughout the hotel
Hanging lights/decorations within the hotel and in outdoor areas with the focus on aesthetics (using 18’ tall ladders)
Setting up fake and live trees up to 20 feet in height
Ensuring guest room trees are decorated and delivered on time
Winter

Ensures the sidewalks, pathways, and stairs are free of snow and ice at all times
Operation of snow removal equipment as required

Qualifications

Your Skills & Qualifications:

Previous experience as a gardener or in a greenhouse/nursery is an asset
Strong ability in indoor and outdoor plant care is preferred
Must have Class 5 driver’s license and driver’s abstract in good standing
Constant standing and walking throughout shift at a fast pace
Must be able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 70 lbs. up and down stairs
Working on ladders and dealing with tall heights while holding/lifting items
Working in a variety of temperatures and conditions (snow, heat, rain)
Excellent communication skills, detailed oriented, and strong organization skills
Perform tasks under minimal supervision and enjoy a repetitive environment
