Seasonal Transit Operator


The Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission (BVRTSC) is looking to add Full-time and Part-time Transit Operators to our team for our 2025 summer season (May long weekend to Thanksgiving). We provide public transit to both visitors and residents looking to enjoy the Bow Valley without the use of a private vehicle. Our team members make an impact in our communities every day and we’re excited about the opportunity to grow this team for the upcoming summer season.


We’re seeking dedicated, safety-focused individuals with at least five years of driving experience to join our team as Transit Operators. Successful candidates are customer-focused, demonstrate exceptional communication skills, and take pride in providing safe, reliable service to our community.


No previous transit experience required – comprehensive training, including bus licencing can be provided.


We operate 22 hours a day and 365 days per year which means our Transit Operators work a variety of different shifts ranging from 4 to 11.5 hours and starting from as early as 4:30AM and ending as late as 1:30AM.


Job Profile:


Position Summary

Reporting to the Operations Manager, Transit Operators serve as frontline representatives of Roam Transit, and are responsible for delivering a safe, reliable, and customer focused service to the community. Key responsibilities include assisting passengers to find their way around the Bow Valley, operate onboard systems effectively to ensure accurate data reporting, conduct basic vehicle checks, follow schedule and route guidelines while maintaining awareness of changing or adverse weather and traffic conditions, and always prioritize passenger safety. Transit operators are required to learn and follow all of Roam’s safety and operational procedures.


Responsibilities:

Provide excellent customer service to all customers of BVRTSC and the public
Provide boarding and de-boarding assistance for passengers with mobility aids. strollers, bikes, or other accessibility needs.
Maintain a clean and safe vehicle environment by performing light housekeeping or quick checks to ensure the bus remains tidy and comfortable for passengers
Operate all Roam buses and vehicles in a safe, courteous manner while adhering to and complying with all traffic and safety laws and regulations.
Collect and verify passenger fares in alignment with the current fare schedule
Adhere to Roam’s schedule and routes at all times while maintaining on time public transit service as much as possible.
Attend all required training and staff meetings as requested
Communicate with fellow transit operators and operations team members as required
Perform all vehicle Pre trip and Post trip inspections and report any issues to the operations team as required
Report all accidents and incidents as per Roam’s policies and procedures
Effectively operate all onboard electronic systems and applications in accordance with established procedures.
Responsible for ensuring the ongoing safety and well-being of both the bus and its passengers while operating the bus
Additional related tasks as required

Qualifications:

Education Requirement:

High School Diploma required

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of customer service experience required. Preferably in roles involving direct interaction with the public, such as retail or hospitality
Minimum 5 years of driving experience with a valid Class 5 (or equivalent) drivers’s licence is required. Experience does not need to include commercial or large vehicles.
Experience driving/operating large vehicles/machinery (e.g., vans, delivery trucks, forklifts, excavators, etc.) is considered an asset but is not mandatory
Previous experience in a transportation or public transit setting is considered an asset but is not mandatory
Experience in roles requiring quick thinking, effective decision-making under pressure, adaptability, and spatial awareness is beneficial and considered an asset

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English. Ability to speak a second language is considered an asset.
Ability to handle cash and operate electronic equipment
Customer service focused with an ability to provide courteous and professional interactions with passengers of diverse backgrounds and needs.
Knowledge of the Bow Valley area and Roam’s services considered an asset
Ability to problem solve independently and adapt to unexpected and stressful situations such as route detours, passenger emergencies, or vehicle issues in a professional and composed manner
Ability to work both in a team and independent environment
Ability to sit for extended periods of time while remaining focused, occasionally performing physical tasks like assisting passengers with mobility devices
Excellent time management skills required
Knowledge of conflict resolution principles
Ability to make quick decisions and judgements to ensure passenger and vehicle safety
Knowledge of basic traffic laws and regulations in Alberta
Ability to safely operate a vehicle while quickly processing visual information such as speed limits, and road signs while also monitoring environmental hazards such as traffic patterns, and pedestrians.
Exceptional spatial awareness including the ability to accurately judge distance, positioning, and anticipate obstacles, is essential for success is this role

Other Requirements, Conditions:

Full Alberta Class 5 Operators License Required (No Graduated Driver’s License), must be in good standing with no more than 3 demerits points in the past 2 years
Class 1 or 2 Alberta Operator’s License considered an asset
Q endorsement (airbrakes) considered an asset
Minimum of 18 years of age
Must be legally able to work in Canada
Must pass criminal record check
Must be able to obtain all the necessary operating licenses and permits to legally operate a municipal transit bus
Must be able to work a shift schedule which includes weekdays, weekends, early mornings (as early as 4:00AM), late nights (as late as 1:30 AM), and holidays. Shifts are typically 8-10 hours but can vary anywhere from 4 to 11.5 hours.
Must have reliable transportation to and from both Banff and Canmore. Shifts start and end in the same location but may be in either Banff or Canmore.
