Town of Banff Banff, AB Full-time Town of Banff Banff, AB Job details Job type Full-time Location Banff, AB Full job description Full-Time, One Year Term Contract The Town of Banff is seeking candidates for a 1-year Environmental Intern role to support implementation of the Town’s Environmental Master Plan, which encompasses topics related to ecosystems, emissions/energy, waste, water, air, and sustainable transportation. As a global tourism destination community inside Banff National Park and the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site, the Town of Banff strives to be a global environmental leader and model environmental community. Banff Council has set ambitious goals related to our Environmental Master Plan including 70% waste diversion by 2028 and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. We also aim to eliminate human-wildlife conflicts in our community, while protecting sensitive species and ecosystems within, and adjacent to the town site. Overall, our environmental goals are aimed at ensuring the community has no net negative environmental impacts (NNNEI) on the ecological integrity of Banff National Park. As a member of the Town of Banff Environment team, you will work closely with the Town’s Waste and Energy Coordinators to implement key projects, programs, and policies related to the Environmental Master Plan. You will “Take Care of Banff” by being a front-line representative for public education activities that encourage and support Banff residents, businesses, organizations, and visitors to make environmentally positive choices. You will also undertake research and program development activities to support new and existing Council initiatives and provide administrative support to the Environment team when needed. Key responsibilities: Supporting implementation of the Town’s Environmental Master Plan, Zero Waste Action Plan, and Renewable Energy Transition Roadmap Development and administration of the Town’s environmental incentive programs. Education and monitoring of public compliance with key environmental bylaws. Support expansion of Banff’s circular economy & reuse initiatives by collaborating on events and community engagement activities (i.e. repair cafes, swaps) Supporting the design and delivery of communications and educational programs (Environmental Newsletter, advertising, outreach booths, etc.). Weekly public engagement on environmental topics at the Banff Farmer’s Market (May-Sept). Outreach, and environmental training support to major employers in the community (spring/fall). Outreach activities related to eliminating wildlife attractants and preventing human-wildlife incidents. Field and desktop mapping of fruit trees, invasive species, etc. Data management (inc. GIS) to improve monitoring, reporting, and education on environmental metrics.[CB1] The successful candidate will have studied and/or demonstrated knowledge in the fields of Environmental/Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences, Geography, Urban Planning, Education, Communications, or topics of a similar nature. Candidates should have specific interests in wildlife/habitat conservation, waste reduction, environmental education, or climate change mitigation. You are a strong communicator and listener, and you are passionate about engaging and educating the public to promote positive environmental behaviors. You are adept at engaging with diverse demographics patiently, honestly, and openly. The successful candidate will have strong computer skills, including fluency in Office 365 and SharePoint. The Environmental Intern will report to the Manager of Environment. This is a Banff-based position working primarily in and around the Banff community, and/or on site in Banff Town Hall with limited work-from-home privileges subject to supervisor approval. The successful applicant will be encouraged to reside in the Town of Banff, although this is not a job requirement and will not affect eligibility. This position will be based on 35 hours/week, commencing on January 7th, 2025 and ending on January 2nd, 2026 (later start dates will also be considered). Annual salary will start at approximately $46,010[MH2] .00 depending on prior education and experience. The Town will consider participating in post-secondary co-op, internship, or work placement programs where program requirements are compatible with the duties described in this job description.
